Born in Barcelinhos (1977) into a family of factory workers, he began doing theatre as a teenager in secondary school, then in an amateur theatre group, and later in university theatre. He made his professional debut in 2001 at the Teatro Nacional São João.
Since 2001 he has worked in theatre with various companies, and in film and television, as an actor, playwright and director. He is represented by Agente a Norte. He has directed more than twenty productions, presented in various theatres, universities and prestigious festivals (FIT in Belo Horizonte, BE Festival in Birmingham) and in several countries (Copenhagen, Leipzig, London, Newcastle, Rio de Janeiro, São Paulo, Santiago de Compostela, Toulouse, Vigo, among others).
In 2008 he founded the creation and programming structure Casa da Esquina, in Coimbra, believing in theatre as a space for assembly, for sharing and discussing conflicting points of view — a time built between those who make it and those who watch it. It is a broken mirror that shows the many facets of the human condition.
He was a Calouste Gulbenkian Foundation grant holder and lived in London, where he attended the London International School of Performing Arts (Jacques Lecoq method).
He is the author of around a dozen plays. His work has been published by Imprensa da Universidade de Coimbra, Teatro Nacional D. Maria II & Bicho do Mato, Universidad Autónoma de Nuevo León (Mexico), Les Presses universitaires du Midi (France), Livrinhos dos Artistas Unidos, and Edições Húmus.
He is an Assistant Professor on the Theatre and Education degree at ESEC/IPC (acting, playwriting and directing), a researcher at CEIS20 – Centre for 20th-Century Interdisciplinary Studies at the University of Coimbra, and has been a PhD candidate in Artistic Studies at the University of Coimbra since 2018, with the project “Politics, Resistance and Dramaturgical Practice in Contemporary Times – A Case Study.”
From 2015 to 2025 he co-directed the Theatre Reading Club (Teatro Académico de Gil Vicente / A Escola da Noite). He was a jury member for the École de Maître, part of the Panos/TNDM II project, and won two EURODRAM text-translation awards, in 2020 and 2023; his text Lado A – Welcome to Europe was named a Eurodram-recommended original text for translation in 2024.
In 2025 he received the Miguel Rovisco Award (7th edition) from Teatro da Trindade for the play Julieta & Romeu. In 2026 he was awarded the DGLAB literary creation grant for playwriting and writing for theatre.
Ricardo Correia’s work is made collaboratively and engages with the documentary, testimony, archive and post-memory, blending the real and the fictional. He seeks to illuminate the less visible sides of History, believing in theatre as a device for contesting memory and reinterpreting History.
